NEW: Selection for Maine Eastern Cup state quota will be filled by J1 & J2

Selections for FIS Development Series 2008 season.

State quota of 5 will be filled first by J2's (3 athletes), then J1's (2 athletes).

These athletes are still to be selected by NTSM.

As in the past, in order to be eligible for selection, you must be a USSA and MARA member in good standing, and have competed in two MARA races at the time of selection. Athletes must be registered and paid members of MARA prior to any race used for qualifying. Notice of intent to compete for seeded competitors will be due within 48 hours of the publishing of the list of automatics. The list will be sent to all seeded coaches. After Maine announces its list, coaches have 24 hours to confirm. If your name is on the Maine quota and you do not attend; your name will be removed from the next selection criteria. Intent to compete forms for the development quota should be copied to the Seeded Committee Chair, so that she has the forms before the final list even comes out.

Intent to Compete

All racers wishing to compete in Eastern Cup Series Races, National FIS Races, or FIS University Races must have their coach submit an INTENT TO COMPETE statement 5 days prior to the selection of state quota spots.

For the SR - J 1 - J 2 Postseason Races, notice of INTENT TO COMPETE will be due within 48 hours of the publishing of the list of automatics. The list will be sent to all seeded coaches. After Maine announces its list, coaches have 24 hours to confirm. If your name is on the Maine quota and you do not attend, your name will be removed from the next selection criteria. Intent to compete forms for the development quota should be copied to the Seeded Committee Chair, so that she has the forms before the final list even comes out.

All notifications must be sent to Laurel Lashar, Seeded Competition Chair. Fax 237-3026 or e-mail llashar@sugarloaf.com is acceptable. Verbal communications by phone 237-6896 MUST be followed by written copy.

The SEEDED COMPETITION COMMITTEE administers the criteria, which are established to select seeded competitors (15 years and older) to fill the Maine quotas to elite events, and selects the coaching staff to accompany these racers and recommends changes in the Maine Teams as needed.

Committee:

Laurel Lashar - chair

Mark Godomsky, Doug Williams, Harry Ricker

SEEDED COMPETITORS are those selected to fill state quota to elite events including J2 Regional Championships, SR-J 1 - J 2 Eastern Regional Championships, and J 1 - J 2 Finals. For racers to be considered for these quotas, your 2007-2008 USSA and MARA membership needs to be complete.

For quota slots to races earlier in the season, selection will be made from those athletes who are MARA members at the time of selection.

NATIONAL TEAM SELECTION METHOD (NTSM) is the method used throughout the country when making racer selection based on points from more than one discipline. Competitors are ranked in each discipline to be considered and one racer is selected from each discipline. If the racer in one discipline has already been selected, the next discipline is considered; selection continues until the quota is filled. A more complete explanation can be found in the USSA Competition Guide.

Selection for MARA Gold Card Team (racer subsidies):

MARA will subsidize entry fees for up to 20 low point skiers who joined MARA by November 15, 2007. The selection of up to 12 men and 8 women is determined through NTSM using the November 2007 points list. To be on this list, points in technical disciplines must be 75 or lower, and points in speed disciplines must be 125 or lower. Eligibility for selection is based on MARA membership for the 2007-2008 seasons. The athletes listed below will receive subsidized entry to all MARA races in 2007-2008. The following point cut offs have been established for the 2007-2008 season. If, at any time during the season, a MARA athlete's points are lower than the cut off listed for the discipline being contested, entry fees will be subsidized by MARA. The 2007-2008 Gold Card Team will be posted after November 15, 2007.

MARA 2007-2008 GOLD TEAM:

Ben Manter, Leo Menard, Joshua Kernan, Dan Loman, John Canney, Corey Linton, August Fleix, Matt Garand, Gary Rumley, Ross Brockman

Megan Papinueu, Emily Sampson, Lauren McGrath, Whitney Fahy, Liz Thompson, Laura Littman, Emma Coffin, Micaela Holland

MEN & WOMEN SENIOR MARA CUP SPONSERS

Sunday River, Skane Ltd/Odlo USA, Northern Lights, Skier's Edge, Ski Depot, GEE & BEE, Jack Frost, Mt. Abram Ski Shop, and Joseph's Clothing and Sporting Goods generously sponsored the MARA Cup Series in 2006-2007.

Some races will count both for the MARA Cup points and qualifying. Races not designated qualifiers only count for MARA Cup points, including the 2-day MARA Cup Final Races at Sugarloaf March 5th and April 6th.

Points will be accumulated by a world cup type point system:

1. 60   6. 30  11. 15  16. 5

2. 50   7. 27  12. 13  17. 4

3. 45   8. 24  13. 11  18. 3

4. 40   9. 21  14.   9  19. 2

5. 35 10. 18  15.   7  20. 1

Ties will average the place points. For example, a tie for 14th place would take the average of 9 + 7, so each racer would receive 8 points. We will keep MARA Cup Standings current on the web site.
